Trip Itinerary "Trail of Thieves"
Ever wanted to conquer the Baja? We have planned an expedition unlike any other. This 8 day epic expedition will be one you tell your grandkids about. The trip will truly test you, If you’re an adventurous UTV rider and like to push the limits then this is for you. NOT a few hour trail ride tour. We will be doing over 1700+ miles with 90% all on dirt. The days will lead into nights of conquering the Baja. Along the way we will see some specular sights. Bouncing over the Baja Peninsula from the Sea of Cortez to the Pacific multiple times, we will be sure to take in all Baja has to offer. We will have a chance to stop and see historic missions and other Baja favorites.
Once we arrive in Cabo your UTV will be transported back to Tecate. (Transport Cost included) This will allow us to fly back and pick up your UTV in Tecate. The plan is to do 7 days of off road driving down the Baja Peninsula and then stay 2-3 days in Cabo to relax and reflect on the amazing trip. (Hotel in Cabo is NOT included in the trip cost) Commonly, we have friends and family fly down and meet up with us for the few days in Cabo. Please be sure this is for you. Space is limited and this is not for the faint of heart.
Day 1
USA TO SAN FELIPE - This will be a true test of driving ability and endurance! With a 5.30am start time, the lucky few making this trip will cross the US border, through Tecate into Baja Mexico, on what is to be the adventure that no mere mortal will forget.
We will tackle the switch back trails of the La Rumorosa Trail down to the Laguna Salada lake bed the south before crossing Hwy 3 and and into the washes to San Felipe. We will rude the famous San Felipe whoops for a few miles as we come into town.
Day one is a long one but you'll take in more then most ever experience in Baja in just 1 day. Pine forests in the higher elevations the the amazing switch backs of La Romosoa, fast dry lake beds the sand washes that never disappoint.
Day 2
SAN FELIPE TO CATIVINA - Rise and shine, if the epic terrain from day one didn't excite you enough the sun rise over the Cortez will. A quick breakfast on the beach and back into the washes of San Felipe heading south we'll make our way over to the Motomi wash. This famous section of race course is a belt buster so drive light. Rocks, soft sand and maxed out RPM's are on the menu for the day.
We'll let the UTV's cool as we will have a Hwy drive down the 5. Lunch and fuel will be at Gonzaga Bay. Enjoy some Tacos and watch the beautiful Sea of Cortez call you're name. Guess what were not done yet!!! Our destination for the night is Cativina and to get there well lets just say it wont be easy... The "Tractor Trail" awaits and yes we're going up it... Loose rocks and even looser shale on back to back switch backs going up hill... lets just hope you didn't over do it in the washes.
This is the true definition of Baja. The Dr. Seuss trees and cactus forests will leave you in disbelief of the beauty of Baja. The Off the Grid Expedition crew has pre-run and inter-joined a custom section, so that the loop will take us farther south along the beach, before heading east back up to Hwy 1. to the hotel. The day will be amazing with perfect trails and sights you'll never forget. The cactus forests and rock formations of Cativina are a true sight to see. For the most part, the trails are in good shape with an occasional rock or two that might jump out, so drive wisely. Not a huge day but all them same we will put in the miles.
Day 3
CATIVINA to BAY OF LA
We start our day by heading west toward the pacific ocean on a new trail not yet run on any expedition down to the coast. The 100 mile loop will bring us from Cativina to Chapala and will be technical at times. Rocks and ruts will be your nemesis as you negotiate the trails. The coast line drive is spectacular to say the least. This is a time for great pictures. Making the turn back inland to complete the loop we cross the Chapala dry lake bed and back to the HWY. Splashing gas off the Chase Trucks and grabbing a quick bite to eat, we waste no time, we have some big miles to complete. We head into Bay of LA or Bahia De Los Angeles. The trail takes us past the Mission San Borja onto Hwy 5 for a small road section. Be on the lookout for the Baja Dancing Cirio. As you crest the last of the mountains, you will understand the beauty of the Sea of Cortez. A warmer climate, a nice soft bed, air conditioning and a good dinner will await, with the long day behind you!
Day 4
BAY OF LA TO SAN IGNACIO.- If you are an early riser, and want to make your family and friends jealous, the sunrise over the Sea of Cortez is spectacular. Keep in mind Baja has its own climate and being on the gulf side of the peninsula the temperature will be heating up fast.
A first-class breakfast, and then back on the trail, you will see the volcanic islands, just off the coast, and also some old, abandoned jails built by Mexican settlers. The trails of the day consist of some faster dirt roads, allowing you to put the pedal down. But don’t get too comfortable, the trail will become more technical as we head over to San Rafael, a remote but beautiful beach.
Then we will traverse the trails over to El Arco and into San Ignacio, located in the middle of the peninsula and surrounded by a lagoon-type tropical feeling. This is where the humidity starts to kick in, and a tropical part of Baja can be seen for a short while. We have planned to stay at the Hotel La Huerta hotel, where with all things going our way, we can relive the stories of the day with an ice cold beer! Get some much needed rest, because, as stated before, the sun will be up before you know it.
Day 5
SAN IGNACIO TO SCORPION BAY- With an early start, we travel just a few miles into San Ignacio town square to see the beautiful Mission of San Ignacio! (we normally spend about 1hr at the mission)
We will do a little sightseeing around the Mission, take some group pictures, and get back on the super fast trail heading to one of the best surf spots in Baja, Scorpion Bay. Along the trail we cross the salt flats and possibly some non-hazardous water crossing, before our night's destination in Scorpion Bay. Do not dilly-dally, we have a long road ahead of us, driving down the Pacific Coast before turning off into toward the Scorpion Bay Hotel. San Ignacio to Scorpion Bay is about 100 miles. The roads are fast, fun and slippery, so drive with caution. It's always an experience getting gas in Scorpion Bay..... we just leave this for you to experience it for your self... Hotel for the night is the Scorpion Bay Hotel and it is amazing. True Baja hospitality and accommodations you'll wish you had more time there.
Day 6
SCORPION BAY TO PUERTO SAN CARLOS - Beach, Beach and more beach....
If you came to drive on the beach then this is it. Leaving Scorpion Bay as long as the tide permits we'll take the coast line for over 40 miles. The Ocean is on you right and the weather is beautiful as we fly down the hard packed sand. Life is not so bad...... the sandy hill climb at the end will play mind tricks with you but its no match for the 4wd UTVs. Taking a run up to it we'll climb over the 50ft sand hill and run the tight and twisty mangroves toward San Carlos. In this region of Baja the terrain is soft and really forgiving, the white sand trails and high speed whoops will make you giggle all day. To end our amazing day we will be staying beach front in Mag Bay. Although this is one of the shortest days of the trip with less mileage, it allows us to take in some amazing sights and do any needed UTV maintenance. San Carlos serves up quite the party for Off the GRID Expeditions so be prepared to indulge in some amazing food and festivities
Day 7
PUERTO SAN CARLOS TO LA PAZ - Being well rested on days 5 and 6, we are ready to get the heart pumping again!
Heading back out on the trail, we start our winding way over the mountain range. Several places to see along the way: the San Luis Gonzaga ruins and the Mission San Luis Gonzaga Chiriyaqui - the most southern of the missions - will be next to visit. Then we start the trail back over the peninsula to hug the coast down to the City of La Paz
The trails to-day consist of single-lane rocky roads and some possible water crossings and super fast two-lane dirt roads. Time permitting, we will have a chance to see one of the most beautiful bays in Baja, San Evaristo.
Day 8
LA PAZ TO CABO - Navigating our way back out of this major city, we head south down to our trail on this final day of an amazing trip.
We will make a slight detour, and head over to visit the Bahia de Los Metros (Bay of Dreams.) This is when you plan your next life move to Paradise. The we treat you to 170+ mile drive down the East Cape to Cabo. This is a fast-paced, drifting road, with some truly fantastic architectural sights to see. Before you know it, we will be in Cabo…. rubbing your eyes and asking yourself “What have I just done?” Some 1700+ miles later!
Along this trip, we have planned several more sights to visit - Missions, historical points of interest and several coastal wonders. We wanted to plan a great off-road trip to also include and expedition-style feel and explore a little. Most mornings we will have a 6am breakfast and leave by 7am. The earlier we leave, the more we can see throughout the day.
