Four days of pure Baja adventure. Baja Banditos takes you from Tecate deep into the Sierra Juárez Mountains, across wide-open desert, through legendary Baja race terrain, remote ranch country, and along the Pacific Coast.

From fast pine-forest trails and technical mountain sections to open beaches and classic Baja destinations like Horsepower Ranch, Mike’s Sky Ranch, and Rancho Meling, this trip packs a little bit of everything into four unforgettable days.

Pre-Trip Instructions

Once you have registered and your deposit is in, you will receive a registration link. This link will include the individual trip driver and passenger info, Baja Insurance link, hotel details for the night before the trip, parking information for your tow vehicle, UTV Baja prep details, personal preparations, and some FAQ. Please include a registration, Baja Insurance, and a copy of your passport in the UTV in a clear zip-lock bag.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

1 Tecate to Ensenada (Horsepower Ranch)

January 15th, 2027

The adventure begins at the Tecate border, where we’ll cross into Mexico and leave the pavement behind.

Our first day takes us deep into the Sierra Juárez Mountains, starting with approximately 90 miles of flowing mountain trails. It’s the perfect introduction to Baja - enough variety to get comfortable behind the wheel before we start turning up the pace.

As we climb into the mountains, the scenery changes quickly. Rocky desert terrain gives way to pine forests, sweeping corners, and fast trails through some of northern Baja’s most beautiful country. We’ll stop near La Rumorosa for fuel before dropping down toward the massive open landscape of Laguna Salada. Once we hit the desert floor, things open up and we’ll have plenty of room to let the UTVs stretch their legs.

From there, we continue south before turning west toward Ensenada, finishing the day at Horsepower Ranch. Cold drinks, dinner, and a night at one of Baja’s legendary off-road destinations await.

2 Ensenada to Meling Ranch (Into the Baja Backcountry)

January 16th, 2027

After breakfast at the ranch, we’re back on the trail - and today Baja starts showing a little more attitude.

We’ll climb away from Ensenada and head deeper into the mountains on fast, twisting trails with elevation changes, drifting corners, and sections that have seen plenty of Baja race traffic over the years. After approximately 75 miles, we’ll roll into Valle de la Trinidad for fuel, snacks, and a quick break.

Then comes one of the highlights of the trip: the Goat Trail. This section slows things down and puts both driver and machine to work. Rocks, ruts, off-camber sections, steep drops, and tight lines make this one of those trails you’ll be talking about around the dinner table that night.

Once everyone clears the Goat Trail, we’ll make our way toward the famous Mike’s Sky Ranch for a stop and quick vehicle check. Then it’s back into the mountains.

We’ll climb over the summit and work our way through remote Baja ranch country toward Rancho Meling, where we’ll park the UTVs and call it a day.

3 Meling Ranch to Ensenada (From the Mountains to the Pacific)

January 17th, 2027

There’s no need for an alarm clock at Rancho Meling - the roosters have that covered.

After a ranch-style breakfast, we’ll fire up the UTVs and point them west toward the Pacific Ocean.

Today is all about exploring the less-traveled side of Baja. The route from Meling Ranch toward Camalú winds through remote ranch country, rocky washes, narrow trails, and technical sections that keep things interesting. Some sections are slow and calculated; others open up and let us get back on the throttle.

Once we reach Highway 1, we’ll stop for fuel and lunch before heading toward the coast. Then the personality of the day completely changes.

We’ll turn north and begin an approximately 80-mile run up the Pacific side of Baja, mixing hard-packed coastal trails with beaches, open stretches, ocean views, and the occasional patch of Baja silt just to keep everyone honest.

By late afternoon, we’ll roll back into Ensenada and check into the San Nicolás Hotel. After three days in the dirt, tonight is about a hot shower, a good dinner, and enjoying Ensenada.

4 Ensenada To Tecate (The Final Run)

January 18th, 2027

One more morning. One more trail. And one last chance to enjoy Baja before heading home.

We’ll leave Ensenada early and climb back into the mountains toward Laguna Hanson. The landscape changes again as we enter the pine forest, where wide-open dirt roads and long, flowing corners make this some of the most enjoyable riding of the entire trip.

After roughly 85 miles, we’ll turn onto a route connecting us with the Compadre Trail and begin making our way north toward Tecate.

It’s a fitting final day - beautiful scenery, fast trails, mountain air, and plenty of opportunities to enjoy the UTVs before we reach pavement again.

Eventually, the mountains disappear behind us, and the Tecate border comes into view. Four days earlier, we crossed into Mexico as a group looking for an adventure.

We come back with dirty UTVs, great stories, new friendships, and another Baja trip in the books.

Terrain: 65% gravel roads, 10% hill climbs, 15% beach riding, 10% Hyw fast-paced driving style.

Our goal at Off the GRID Expeditions is to have a good time. With that said, being prepared and having the right tools/equipment can make everyone’s day much more enjoyable!

Stock UTV’s are very capable and impressive machines… they are also a lot of fun to customize! Although heavy modification isn’t necessary, there are basic items that you must have when going on a OFF the GRID run.

Here’s a list of required items for our Expeditions:
(Note: some expeditions might require more items, based on specific trail or location needs. See Run descriptions for more details.)

UTV prep is a must prior to any run. If one vehicle has a problem, we all have a problem.
All services done on vehicle. (oil change, air cleaner, brakes, nut and bolt )
All tires aired to proper pressure. ( 1 Spare in required on vehicle)
All equipment and parts securely tied down in UTV.
Full Fuel Tank. (Spare gas can be carried but must be safe and secure on UTV )
Tools, Jack and tow strap securely fastened in UTV.
Helmet with wired speakers for Intercom system. Yes helmets are 100% mandatory.
Radio - Mounted VHF radio, with weatherman programmed frequency 151.625 (see below)
Intercom - We highly recommend a wired intercom so you can clearly hear the radio and can easily transmit on the radio while driving. (see below)
GPS - Lowrance GPS Unit only- No exceptions (We provide the GPS file the morning of the expedition) (see below)
Drivers licence - Vehicle Registration - Insurance
Off Road lights - Some good light so you are comfortable driving at night. LED lights are recommended.
At least one full size spare. (Must be tied down and secure)

So why do we need a GPS?
The GPS is your life line when navigating these technical trails of Baja. Every turn has a surprise and without a well planned trail you would be lost in minutes. The GPS not only displays your exact route but it is also use for milage calculations for turns or and potential hazards as well as waypoints
Communication is key..
We use a VHF 55w radio with a preprogrammed channel to communicate from Utv to Utv. The operating channel is weather man (151.625) please make sure you have this preprogrammed into you're unit. All communication systems must wired into push to talk intercom system to your helmet. The VHF radios allow us to call out any potential hazards, milage, and just general communication amongst the group. Example ( Hazard mile 45.2 on right or "hey dude with the blue Can-Am you have a strap hanging under your Utv" )
Why because they save lives ......
Helmets are mandatory no questions asked. I know some ride with only head sets but with Off the GRID Expeditions you need to wear one. Goggles or full face shield as well !!!! You only have one head on your shoulders so use it wisely and protect it....

To prepare for your adventure, packing doesn't have to be overwhelming. Here's what you'll need:

Luggage: A carry-on size soft duffle bag is sufficient.

Check the weather in Baja California using your smartphone. Given the possibility of getting into the ocean, don't forget your bathing suits. Additionally, pack sandals or flip-flops, comfortable driving shoes, pants, shorts, and a few T-shirts. An all-conditions jacket is essential for chilly days. Your evening attire is your choice, but keep in mind that we'll be driving in the open air, so you may get a little dirty. If rain is in the forecast, a good rain suit will certainly be helpful. For hot days, Off the Grid Sun SPF 60 shirts work wonders to keep you cool. In the summer months, remember to pack sunblock and a hat.

Cooler and plenty of snacks for. the trail. We do stop for lunch, carry you through in case of any trail issues..

Cancellations initiated by the participant received in writing to Off The Grid Expeditions with more than 60 days notice before tour start date will receive their deposit as a credit to be used towards future tours with Off The Grid Expeditions. The credit expires 1 year after issued.
Cancellations initiated by the participant received in writing to Off The Grid Expeditions with 60 or less days notice before the tour start date will forfeit their deposit as a cancellation fee. Any balance payments can be held on file as a credit to be used towards future tours and services with Off The Grid Expeditions. The credit expires 1 year after issued.
Cancellations initiated by the participant received in writing to Off The Grid Expeditions with 30 or less days notice before the tour start date will forfeit their deposit and any balance payments as a cancellation fee.
Cancellations initiated by Off The Grid Expeditions due to conditions beyond their control including but not limited to fires, weather, terrorism, civil strife, floods, earthquakes, or natural catastrophes, etc. will be credited towards a future trip in full amount of balances paid.
